France: Students protesting in Fifth Arrondissement of Paris Jan. 20

Students marching in Paris, France, Jan. 20 to denounce COVID-19 restrictions; smaller protests possible in other major cities.

Warning

Event

Students are protesting in the Fifth Arrondissement of Paris the afternoon of Jan. 20 to denounce the suspension of onsite learning due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Participants are marching from Port-Royal to the Ministry of Higher Education building on Rue Descartes. Smaller actions are possible in cities nationwide.

Heightened security, as well as localized business and transport disruptions, are likely near the protest. The presence of large crowds and associated security measures will likely prompt localized transport disruptions. Current COVID-19 measures severely restrict public gatherings and authorities could attempt to disperse protests if demonstrators fail to observe related social distancing mandates.

While related events are likely to pass without incident, isolated clashes between police and protesters are possible. Authorities could resort to riot-control measures, including tear gas and water cannon, if activists do not comply with police orders. While bystanders are unlikely to be targeted, they could face an indirect threat of physical harm.

Advice

Avoid all protests due to possible clashes. Heed instructions from authorities and leave the area at the first sign of confrontation. Check public transport schedules and local traffic conditions for disruptions before beginning journeys. Allow extra time for travel in protest-affected areas Jan. 20.
