On Jan. 20, a roadside improvised explosive device (IED) detonated near Balidogle airfield in Southwestern Somalia. The attack's target is believed to be a vehicle carrying the governor of the Lower Shabelle region, Abdul Wadir Sidi. Unconfirmed reports indicate the intended target survived the explosion; however, at least three soldiers were killed and five others wounded. No group has formally claimed responsibility for the attack; however, Al-Shabaab routinely engages in similar attacks.

Heightened security is likely in the impact area in the coming hours. Security forces may close roads in the impact area as they respond to and investigate the incident. Disruptions to commercial operations are also possible.

Context

Al-Shabaab continues to exercise effective control over large areas of southern and central Somalia and stages frequent attacks across the country, including in the capital city, Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the UN-backed government.

Avoid the blast site until authorities issue the all-clear. Heed the directives of the security officials. Plan for localized ground travel disruptions.
