Myanmar: Additional fighting possible in Bago Region through end of January

Further clashes may occur in Kyaukkyi Township, eastern Bago Region, Myanmar, through end of January. Tight security measures likely.

Warning

Event

Additional clashes between Myanmar's military (Tatmadaw) and the insurgent Karen National Union (KNU) may occur in Kyaukkyi Township, eastern Bago Region, through the end of January. Fighting has reportedly occurred in the area since at least Jan. 17, displacing hundreds of people. Clashes near Muthe Village Jan. 19 killed at least two locals; Tatmadaw and KNU have both denied responsibility for the incident. Reports indicate that both Tatmadaw and KNU are sending additional personnel to the area. While there have been no reports of further clashes as of Jan. 21, additional fighting may occur in the coming days.

Authorities will likely maintain heightened security measures, including checkpoints and road closures, through the end of January. Any additional incidents are likely to affect transport in the region, especially roads connecting townships.

The impact area is around 115 km (71 miles) north-northeast of Bago city.

Context

KNU is mainly active in Karen State, with some activities in eastern parts of the neighboring Bago Region. The fighting occurred even though KNU is a signatory to the nationwide ceasefire agreement since 2015. The dispute is among several armed conflicts between the Myanmar government and various armed ethnic groups. Further armed confrontations are likely, as the decades-long conflict remains entrenched due to multiple factors, including historical ethnic feuds, competition over natural resources, and demands for greater autonomy from a Bamar-dominated central government.

Advice

Defer nonessential travel to the affected areas until tensions subside and renewed fighting becomes less likely. Reach out to trusted local contacts to determine security conditions, as reporting is often delayed. Carry proper identification documents to present at security checks and heed all instructions from security personnel; remain cooperative if stopped for inspections. If operating in the affected region, maintain contact with your diplomatic mission.
