An improvised explosive device (IED) reportedly detonated near Sheikh Zuweid in North Sinai Governorate, killing at least two military personnel and wounding several others, Jan. 21. Egyptian officials have yet to confirm the incident. While no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, the Islamic State (IS) Wilayat Sinai branch was almost certainly responsible for the attack.

Additional security forces will likely deploy to the impact area. Security forces will likely establish roadblocks throughout Sheikh Zuweid, which will result in significant localized ground travel disruptions. Additional violence between security forces and IS militants remains likely in the coming days.
