An explosion near the Omar Samatar Secondary School in Galkayo reportedly left at least one person dead and three others injured late Jan. 22. Preliminary information suggests that the blast targeted a group of security forces personnel who were on patrol; the deceased individual and two of the wounded were reportedly soldiers. No group has as yet claimed responsibility for the incident; however, Al-Shabaab poses the greatest threat and regularly conducts attacks in the town.

Security forces will likely deploy to the impact site in the coming hours. Ground travel and commercial services disruptions are possible in the area.
