Uganda: Prominent activist calls for a protest in Magere, north of Kampala, Jan. 25

Event

Prominent local activist, Stella Nyanzi, has called for a protest march to the Magere residence of opposition politician, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (popularly known as Bobi Wine), during the morning Jan. 25. The gathering has been called to demand Ssentamu's release from house arrest. Dozens to a few hundred people may gather should the rally proceed. Magere is located immediately north of Kampala.

Heightened security is already in place in the area. Further security force deployments are likely should the protest occur. Clashes between protesters and the security forces are possible if demonstrators ignore police orders to disperse. Ground travel disruptions are likely near the protest site.

Context

Ssentamu's Magere residence was surrounded by security force personnel Jan. 15 following the Jan. 14 presidential election. Incumbent President Yoweri Museveni was declared the winner of the vote, Jan. 16. Ssentamu, who alleged fraud during the poll, placed second. The election period has been characterized by heightened political tension, which has manifested in periods of unrest.
