Event

A magnitude-5.0 offshore earthquake occurred near Bengkulu Province at 2003 Jan. 24. The epicenter was about 89 km (55 miles) south-southwest of Bengkulu. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 80 km (50 miles), and light shaking was probably felt in coastal communities of Bengkulu Province. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; however, significant damage is unlikely. The event has not prompted any tsunami advisories.
