Authorities are working to repair a burst wastewater main in central Wellington Jan. 25. The incident occurred at the intersection of Mercer and Victoria streets in the early afternoon and has caused sewage to spill onto nearby roads; officials have yet to confirm if the spill is impacting safety at Wellington Harbour. Wellington Water has warned people to stay out of the water at Whairepo Lagoon as a precaution. Authorities have also advised buildings in the vicinity to conserve water in the area.

Officials have set up eight traffic management sites in the central business district due to the incident. Only one lane is open on both Mercer and Victoria streets, and traffic congestion is occurring in several areas. Localized business disruptions are also likely.
