Clashes between Somali National Army (SNA) and Jubaland paramilitary forces have occurred in Beled Hawo town, Gedo Region, Jan. 25. Violence began during early morning hours, with Jubaland forces reportedly attempting to take the town; both the SNA and the Jubaland paramilitary group have claimed success in recent hours. Reports of casualties and fatalities remain unverified.

Heightened security, as well as localized business and transport disruptions, are almost certain in the vicinity of Beled Hawo in the coming days.

Context

The attack on Beled Hawo is the latest incident in the dispute between the federal government and regional Jubaland authorities over the Gedo region. Federal authorities have accused Kenya of supporting Jubaland interests, as well as other interferences in Somali affairs. Abdirashid Janan, the alleged leader of Jubaland forces, is reportedly based in Kenya.
