India: Search operation underway in Kulgam, Jammu and Kashmir, Jan. 27, after militant attack on security forces

Indian forces have cordoned off the Shamsi Pora area of Kulgam District in Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory the morning of Jan. 27. A security operation is ongoing in the area following a militant attack on a security convoy that injured at least two military personnel. The official casualty count may rise in the coming hours. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Heightened security measures such as road and business closures, as well as building searches and evacuation are likely in the coming hours. Officials may also restrict movement and telecommunication services in the area. Clashes are possible between militants and security personnel.

The incident site is approximately 45 km (28 miles) southeast of Srinagar.
