South Korea: Unionized delivery workers plan indefinite nationwide strike from Jan. 29

Unionized delivery workers plan indefinite strike across South Korea starting Jan. 29. Delivery delays likely; protests possible.

Informational

Event

Unionized delivery workers plan to stage an indefinite strike across South Korea from Jan. 29. The purpose of the action is to press for reforms to alleviate employee workload. Unions estimate that around 2,800 delivery workers employed by private companies will join in the work stoppage. Thousands of additional workers employed by the state-run Korea Post plan to support the strike by refusing to deliver packages unless they are presorted.

Delivery service delays are likely for the duration of the labor action. Lingering disruptions may continue beyond the end of the strike as service providers work to resolve their backlogs.

Protests are possible during the strike. Demonstrators may gather near distribution centers, company offices, and government buildings. While protests probably will not become severely disruptive, minor localized traffic delays are possible.

Advice

Confirm delivery schedules for the duration of the work stoppage. Consider using alternative carriers if concerned about time-sensitive deliveries.
