Demonstrators clash with security forces in Tripoli, Lebanon, early Jan. 28. Injuries reported. Avoid all protests.

Critical

Event

Security forces and demonstrators against COVID-19 measures have clashed in Tripoli as of early Jan. 28. Reports indicate several dozen injuries among protesters after authorities deployed teargas and water cannons to disperse demonstrators; unconfirmed reports also suggest the use of live ammunition. Additionally, sources indicate at least nine injuries to soldiers after demonstrators allegedly hurled a military grenade at security forces. Violent clashes between security personnel - with support from the military - and demonstrators have occurred near Al-Nur Square, Abdel Hamid Karameh, and the Al Tal neighborhood in the city.

Further demonstrations and clashes between security forces and protesters are likely. Activists assert that the nation's COVID-19 measures exacerbate Lebanon's deteriorating economic situation and poor living conditions. Spontaneous protests have regularly erupted in major cities across the country and have often resulted in clashes between police and demonstrators, among other forms of violence.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations due to the likelihood for additional violence. Exercise extreme caution if operating in Tripoli through at least Jan. 30. Plan for increased security and localized transport disruptions near protests. Follow all police instructions.
