Flooding from heavy rain in Uvira (South Kivu province) has resulted in at least 23 fatalities according to reports on Friday, April 17. Local media stated that more than 50 people have also suffered injuries and several houses have been damaged. Reports indicate that the worst affected districts are Kasenga, Kakombe, and Mulongwe. The Mulongwe River has also reportedly overflowed onto several avenues and the National Road 5 in the city.

Further disruption due to damage from the flooding and continued rescue operations should be expected in the near term.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
