Japan announces temporary closure of its embassy in Baghdad on January 8; Japanese nationals advised to temporarily evacuate Iraq



On Wednesday, January 8, japan announced that it would temporarily close its embassy in Baghdad due to safety concerns following Iranian missile attacks on US assets in the country on the same day. The Foreign Ministry also called on Japanese nationals to evacuate Iraq as it raises its warning levels regarding safety and security in Iran and Iraq.


Heightened tensions are reported between Iran and the United States following a targeted attack that killed Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani on January 3.
