Members of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) have called for a peaceful protest in Monrovia on Thursday, March 12, to denounce perceived police abuse of journalists. Protesters are expected to gather at 08:00 (local time) to deliver a petition to President George Weah. As of Wednesday, March 11, the exact location of the protest remains unknown.
A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are expected in the vicinity of the demonstration.
According to the PUL, as of mid-March, at least seven cases of assaults by security forces on journalists have been reported since January 2020.
Individuals in Liberia, notably in Monrovia, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
