Four people reportedly dead in Elazığ province following 6.7-magnitude earthquake January 24; aftershocks possible over the near term

Four people were reportedly killed and at least two others were injured in Elazığ province after a 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit the area at approximately 20:55 (local time) on Friday, January 24. Several buildings reportedly collapsed in the town of Sivrice, and further damage and casualties are possible in rural areas outside of the town. Rescue operations are underway as of 22:20 on Friday. Further details are still emerging.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.  

Advice

Individuals in the affected area are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks. 

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
