Approximately 7000 people gathered in Guatemala City on Saturday, November 21, to protest against President Alejandro Giammattei and the government over their approval of a budget that cuts education and health spending. Hundreds broke into the Congress building during the protest, setting fire to parts of it. Security forces responded by deploying tear gas to disperse the protesters, with reports indicating that some protesters were injured in the clashes.
Further anti-government unrest is likely over the near term. A heightened security presence and associated disruption to transportation and business is to be expected in the vicinity of protest sites.
Individuals in Guatemala City are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
