Bangladesh: Violent clashes reported in Sirajganj amid political rally December 8

Violent clashes reported between Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Awami League (AL) supporters in Sirajganj on December 8; further rallies and associated clashes possible in the coming days

At least 50 people, including five policemen, have reportedly been injured in clashes that erupted between supporters of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Awami League (AL) in the city of Sirajganj (Sirajganj district) on Sunday, December 8. Clashes broke out after rallies of both parties encountered on EB road, prompting police to fire live ammunition in the air to disperse the crowd.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are expected in the area over the coming days as the BNP have called for nationwide rallies on Tuesday, December 10, to mark International Human Rights Day. Further clashes cannot be ruled out.

Individuals in Sirajganj, Dhaka, and Bangladesh more generally, are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations, anticipate a heightened security presence and transportation disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
