Nigeria: Demonstration expected in Abuja January 20

Opposition demonstration planned in Abuja January 20; heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions expected

Warning

Event

The opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) has called for a peaceful protest to be held in Abuja on Monday, January 20, to denounce the January 14 judgment of the Supreme Court which nullified the electoral victory of the Imo State PDP governorship candidate. Supporters of the PDP are expected to gather at 09:00 (local time) outside the party's headquarters located in Maitama district and march towards the Supreme Court building.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected in the area over the coming hours. Clashes between protesters and security forces are possible.

Advice

Individuals in Abuja are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests due to the risk of violence, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.

The security environment in Nigeria is complex and is particularly challenging in the northeast and extreme south of the country due to the presence of armed groups, high crime rates, and the risk of kidnapping. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel to such areas.
