Ethiopia: Power outage reported in Tigray region Feb. 17 following alleged attack on electrical infrastructure
Electricity outage occurring in Ethiopia's Tigray region, Feb. 17, after reported attack on utility lines. Disruptions likely.
Event
An electrical power outage is reportedly occurring in Ethiopia's Tigray region as of late Feb. 17. Officials with utility provider Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) assert that the blackout is the result of an attack by armed groups affiliated with the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) on power line infrastructure near Adi Gudem along the Alamata-Mekelle route. Technicians are reportedly working to repair the damage; however, authorities have given no estimate as to when power may be fully restored in the region.
Business, transport, and communications disruptions are likely until service is fully restored. Power outages could also create delays at Alula Aba Nega Airport (MOX).
Advice
Charge all communications and other portable electronic devices when possible. Unplug electronic equipment that is not connected to surge protectors. Exercise caution when driving in areas affected by power outages. Ensure that generators are functional if operating in affected areas. Confirm business appointments. Verify that security systems are working, including after power resumes. Follow all instructions from local security personnel.
