Warning

Event

Officials will deploy additional security throughout downtown Washington, DC, March 3-5, due to the possibility of protests. The move by authorities comes out of an abundance of caution over the potential for demonstrations by adherants to the QAnon conspiracy theory who assert that former President Donald J. Trump will return to office on March 4. While no organization has confirmed plans to rally in the city, nearly 5,000 members of the National Guard will be in downtown Washington, DC, following a request from the US Capitol Police for additional security. Any unannounced protests that may materialize will most likely take place near government buildings, especially the White House and the US Capitol, as well as along Pennsylvania Avenue.

Localized transport and business disruptions are possible, especially in downtown Washington, DC, near government buildings. Major disruptions or clashes are unlikely, but cannot be ruled out.

Context

Authorities have decided to deploy additional security around March 4, despite there being no specific protests planned following the security breaches in the US Capitol on Jan. 6. While major demonstrations or disruptions are unlikely, heightened security will probably remain in place in central Washington, DC until at least mid-March.

Advice

Strictly heed instructions from authorities. Confirm appointments in downtown Washington, DC, March 4. Allow additional time to reach your destination if operating in the city while tighter security remains in place.
