Informational

Event

Activists plan to protest in Luanda April 9. Participants will gather from 12:00 at Cemiterio da Santa Ana, and at 13:00 will march along Avenida Deolinda Rodrigues to Largo Primeiro de Maio, stopping at three locations along the way. The action is being held for multiple reasons; to call for the release of political prisoners, the end of the conflict in Cabinda Province, and to demand that the government remove Spanish information technology company Indra from managing the general election, scheduled for August.

Security forces will almost certainly deploy to monitor the protest and manage traffic; localized road travel disruptions are likely. Authorities routinely intimidate and harass activists until they disperse, especially if protests are political in nature, such as the April 9 demonstration. Clashes are therefore possible.

Advice

Avoid the protest as a precaution April 9. Plan for localized disruptions. Depart the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Heed the instructions of authorities.
