Militants attacked Otomabere village, located 45km (28 miles) from Komanda town, Ituri Province, on June 5. The raid left at least 16 people dead. Authorities reported that militants burned down 30 residential structures in the attack. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Context

The incident highlights the persistent threat of militant violence in eastern regions of the DRC despite the implementation of a state of siege in the Ituri and North Kivu provinces. President Felix Tshisekedi extended the State of Siege in Ituri and North Kivu provinces May 20 until further notice. Authorities have indicated that the State of Siege will only be lifted once security conditions in the two impacted provinces improve. Multiple armed groups operate in the area, including the Islamic State-linked Allied Democratic Forces (ADF). Violence in the region has left hundreds of people dead since 2021.
