Burundi: Authorities remove pre-arrival COVID-19 testing requirements as of Aug. 19 /update 22
Authorities in Burundi remove pre-arrival COVID-19 testing requirements as of Aug. 19. Domestic measures unchanged.
Event
Authorities have removed the mandatory pre-arrival COVID-19 test as of Aug. 19. Travelers must still undergo testing upon arrival at their own cost. Travelers may be required to self-isolate for 24 hours while waiting for the result. Individuals who test positive must quarantine at their own cost until they have recovered. All travelers must book their arrival tests through the Ministry of Health website accessible here.
Domestic Measures
Officials encourage social distancing and the use of facemasks. In addition, festive gatherings, karaoke venues, and nightclubs remain closed.
International Travel Restrictions
The land border with Rwanda remains closed to passenger traffic, while the land borders with DRC and Tanzania are open to passenger traffic under strict health protocols; enhanced screening measures are in place at all ports of entry.
Authorities could impose, extend, or otherwise amend any COVID-19-related restrictions with little or no notice.
Advice
Follow all official instructions. Abide by national health and safety measures. Reconfirm all travel arrangements before arrival. Consider delaying traveling if experiencing symptoms associated with COVID-19, as they may prompt increased scrutiny and delays. Liaise with trusted contacts for further updates and guidance. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation. Ensure contingency plans account for further disruptive measures or extensions of current restrictions. Reconsider and reconfirm nonemergency health appointments. Plan for queues and delays at available shopping centers.
