Guatemala: Activists protest, block routes nationwide Aug. 9; demonstrations planned in Guatemala City Aug. 11

Activists affiliated with several unions, including the Popular and Social Assembly (Asamblea Popular y Social, ASP), are protesting across Guatemala Aug. 9 and plan to demonstrate in Guatemala City Aug. 11. Participants will carry out blockades along several highways nationwide until 18:00 Aug. 9. Roadblocks are ongoing early Aug. 9 on KM 188 of the CA-1 Highway near Cuatro Caminos, in Quetzaltenango, and on KM 37 and KM 53 of the CA-9 Highway near San Vicente Pacaya and Sanarate. Protesters also plan to block main routes in or near Guatemala City, San Marcos, San Cruz del Quiche, as well as block traffic along the Ixtacapa Bridge on the CA-2 Highway Aug. 9. Organizers have not yet confirmed specific locations or times for the gatherings in Guatemala City. Protesters are gathering to denounce the high cost of living, among other grievances.

The roadblocks are likely to result in ground transport and business disruptions nationwide Aug. 9 and in Guatemala City and surrounding areas Aug. 11. A heavy police presence is almost certain near any major gatherings that occur. Police could use force to disperse participants and unblock major roads. Any violence would pose an incidental threat to bystanders.

Avoid all protests as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security forces and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Do not attempt to pass through any roadblock protests. Check traffic conditions and public transport schedules for disruptions before beginning journeys.
