Guinea-Bissau: Public transport workers to strike nationwide through Aug. 26

The Federation of Associations of Drivers and Public Transport Workers of Guinea-Bissau striking nationwide through Aug. 26.

Warning

Event

The Federation of Associations of Drivers and Public Transport Workers of Guinea-Bissau launched a five-day general strike Aug. 22. The action is in response to the government's failure to implement a memorandum of understanding signed in 2021 after waves of strikes by public transport workers, under which the government pledged to end the collection of the Road Fund (circulation tax) until roads were repaired. The Federation has warned the strike movement could continue until further notice should the government not comply with their demands.

Disruptions to transportation services are likely for the duration of the strike action. Demand for available transport will likely increase. Related protests are possible during the strike period. Protests, should they occur, are likely in urban centers, including Bissau, Bafata, Gabu, and Bubaque. In towns and cities, protests are likely near government buildings. Security forces will almost certainly deploy to and attempt to disperse any gatherings that occur. Clashes are possible at all related events. Protests and security force deployments will likely result in localized ground travel disruptions.

Advice

Reconfirm all transportation services. Avoid all protests. Heed the instructions of officials.
