Israel: Iron Dome air defense system intercepts dozens of rockets fired from Gaza Strip toward southern, central regions late Aug. 5

IDF intercepts dozens of rockets fired from Gaza Strip toward southern, central Israel late Aug. 5. Further strikes possible.

Critical

Event

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) has fired more than 60 rockets at southern and central Israel late Aug. 5, activating rocket sirens in the targeted areas. Israel's Iron Dome air defense system intercepted the projectiles. There have been no immediate reports of direct damage or casualties.

The rocket attacks follow the Israel Defense Forces' (IDF) killing of a senior PIJ leader in the Gaza Strip earlier on Aug. 5. The IDF will almost certainly launch retaliatory airstrikes on targets in Gaza in the coming hours. Heightened security measures are likely in Israel's Southern and Central districts over the coming hours. Gaza-based militants may fire additional rockets at communities in southern and central Israel over the short term. Precautionary measures, such as evacuations, are possible in the affected areas.

Advice

Monitor local media and heed the instructions of security forces. If incoming mortar rounds or rockets are reported or warning sirens sound in the general vicinity, report to the nearest bomb shelter and await further instructions from authorities. If there is no shelter nearby, stay indoors, away from windows and exterior walls. If possible, move to a ground floor or basement.
