Burkina Faso: Militants ambush convoy in Soum Province Sept. 26

Event

Unidentified militants ambushed a military convoy near Gaskinde, Soum Province, Sahel Region, Sept. 26, killing at least ten soldiers. An unconfirmed number of people also suffered injuries in the incident. The convoy was traveling to Djibo when the attack occurred. Investigations are ongoing.

An increased security presence is likely in the area over the coming days. Further attacks in the Sahel region are probable in the foreseeable future. Localized disruptions to ground transportation may occur.

Gaskinde is around 25 km (16 miles) south of Djibo.

Context

In recent years, the Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) and Ansar-ul Islam have emerged as the main non-state armed groups in Burkina Faso. Both groups have claimed responsibility for attacks in the country's north and east, as well as in Ouagadougou. Further attacks are likely, given the nation's porous borders with Mali and Niger and the limited capabilities of its security forces.

Militants typically target security facilities and patrols in remote locations near the borders, though assaults on civilians have increased. Attacks have also spread to previously unaffected areas despite increased security operations by government forces. Militant groups have repeatedly targeted vital infrastructure, schools, religious sites, government offices, and security checkpoints.
