Ethiopia: Suspected FANO rebels kill up to 61 people in Amuruu district, Oromia Region, Aug. 30

Event

Armed assailants killed up to 61 people in an attack in Agamsa, Amuruu district, Horo Guduru Wollega zone, Oromia Region, Aug. 30. While no group immediately claimed responsibility for the assault, witnesses have blamed the attack on the Amhara FANO militia. Most of those killed were ethnic Oromo individuals. Agamsa town was reportedly destroyed in the attack, prompting hundreds of people to flee the area.

A heightened security presence is almost certain to be deployed in the area over the coming days. Similar attacks are likely in the Horo Guduru Wellega Zone over the medium term.

Context

Ethiopia is experiencing widespread ethnic tensions in several regions. The Amhara people have been targeted frequently in regions such as Oromia, prompting retaliation from Amhara militia groups, including the FANO youth group. Most recently in mid-June 2022, the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) rebel group killed at least 200 civilians from the Amhara ethnic group in Oromia Region.
