Colombia: Mine workers to hold protests in La Guajira and Cesar departments, Oct. 13

Miners to hold protests in several locations in northern Colombia, Oct. 13, to oppose a tax reform bill.

Mine workers plan to hold protests in the northern La Guajira, Magdalena, and Cesar departments Oct. 13 to oppose a tax reform bill currently being discussed in the nation's Congress. Activists in La Guajira Department intend to gather at the main access to Cerrejon at 08:00 and march to the main square of Albania. In Cesar Department, demonstrators plan to rally in the main park of La Jagua de Ibirico starting at 17:00. Another march from Glorieta de los Musicos to the Alfonso Lopez Square is planned in the city of Valledupar. In the Magdalena Department, activists will gather at the Templete of Plaza Centenario in Cienaga from 09:00.

Hundreds of people are likely to participate in each of the demonstrations. Heightened security near all protest venues is likely. Gatherings are likely to cause transport and business disruptions.
