The gunman responsible for a mass-casualty shooting at a childcare center in Uthai Sawan Subdistrict, Na Klang District, Nong Bua Lamphu Province afternoon Oct. 6 has killed himself. The perpetrator, who was a former police officer, killed at least 34 people, which included members of the shooter’s family, before turning his gun on himself. Officials may provide updates on casualties in the coming hours. The motive for the shooting remains unclear.

Officials will almost certainly maintain heightened security measures at and around the incident site and in Uthai Sawan Subdistrict through Oct. 6 as investigations continue. Localized transport and business disruptions may occur.

Uthai Sawan Subdistrict is approximately 70 km (43 miles) southwest of Udon Thani.
