Uruguay: Unionized construction workers to strike, protest nationwide Oct. 20

Unionized construction workers plan to hold a nationwide 24-hour strike in Uruguay, and march in Montevideo, Oct. 20.

Warning

Event

Construction workers affiliated with the National Union of Construction and Related Workers (Sindicato Unico Nacional de Construction y Anexos, SUNCA) plan to strike nationwide Oct. 20. The purpose of the labor action is to demand more investment from the national government and improved benefits. Striking workers will also stage a protest march in Montevideo as part of the work stoppage; participants will assemble at the Universidad de la Republica esplanade before marching to the Legislative Palace, where a rally will take place. Protests in other cities are possible, although organizers have announced no specific plans for such events.

The march will likely be well attended and prompt transport and business disruptions in downtown Montevideo. Heightened security near government offices is also likely.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations near the march route in Montevideo, Oct. 20. Heed the instructions of local authorities.
