Islamic State claims responsibility for Jan. 1 attack near Kabul International Airport (KBL), Afghanistan, that killed at least 14 people.

Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K) claimed responsibility Jan. 2 for the suicide bombing attack that occurred outside the military wing of Kabul International Airport (KBL) Jan. 1. The militant group claimed to have killed 20 people and wounded 30 others; the Taliban have disputed these casualty figures, stating that they will release the exact toll later. Nonetheless, initial reports indicated that at least 14 people were killed and 18 others injured in the attack.

Further similar attacks cannot be ruled out over the coming days. The Taliban will likely heighten security measures at all government buildings, security institutions, and prominent hotels across Kabul in response to the Jan. 1 assault.

Maintain heightened vigilance and avoid large concentrations of security forces if operating in Kabul. Carry personal identification documents. Heed all instructions issued by security personnel.
