Maldives: Additional protests possible nationwide over sentencing of former President Abdulla Yameen through late January
Further protests possible over sentencing of former President Abdulla Yameen in Maldives through late January. Increased security likely.
Event
Activists and supporters of former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen and his Progressive Party of Maldives may hold additional protests nationwide through late January. Yameen was sentenced to 11 years on money laundering charges on Dec. 25. His party claims the investigation and trial were unfair and a political vendetta. In recent weeks, demonstrators have rallied in Male and Addu City, prompting mass arrests during some incidents.
Street marches and rallies are possible in the vicinity of the Maafushi prison housing Yameen, the Criminal Court building, offices and residences of government leaders such as President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, as well as popular protest venues like political party offices, public squares, and Artificial Beach in Male. Dozens of participants are likely to attend such demonstrations.
Localized transport disruptions are probable near well-attended gatherings; security checkpoints are possible near government buildings. Clashes are possible if activists breach security cordons, rival parties organize counter-protests, or police forcibly disperse crowds. Security forces are likely to quell any violent unrest quickly.
Advice
Avoid any demonstrations that materialize as a precaution; allow additional time for travel in the affected areas. If violence breaks out nearby, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-governmental building. Monitor trusted local media sources for updates on protests and related disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
