Pakistan: The Swedish Embassy in Islamabad closed indefinitely as of April 11

The Swedish Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan, closed indefinitely as of April 11 due to security concerns.

Informational

Event

As of April 11, the Swedish Embassy in Islamabad has closed indefinitely citing security concerns. The closure was announced on April 5. The embassy did not elaborate on the nature of the threat(s). On-site services as well as document delivery to and from the embassy are suspended until further notice.

Context

The closure may be in response to the ongoing threat of terrorism or civil unrest.

The threat of terrorism remains high in Pakistan. Known and specific threats include the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and separatist groups like the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). The most notable threat is from the TTP, which called off a ceasefire with the Pakistani security forces on Nov. 28. Although the TTP typically carries out small-scale attacks on security and/or government personnel in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces, it has the capacity to plan and stage mass casualty attacks in cities across the country.

The Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI), the chief opposition party, has also regularly staged disruptive and violent protests in major cities since its leader Imran Khan was ousted from power in April 2022. Further unrest is likely until federal elections conclude in October.

Advice
