UK: Unionized security staff at London Heathrow Airport to strike through May

Unionized security staff at London Heathrow Airport, UK, to strike May 4-6, 9, 10, and 25-27; airport and flight disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Unite the Union has called on affiliated security staff at London Heathrow Airport (LHR) to strike May 4-6, 9, and 10 to demand increased pay. The strike involves security guards at Terminal 5 and Campus security guards responsible for checking all cargo entering the airport. Related demonstrations by striking workers are possible outside the airport during the strike period. Further strikes are scheduled for May 25-27.

Unless averted, the action may disrupt airport operations and flight schedules at LHR, including possible delays and cancelations, though airport authorities have stated that contingency plans are in place and flights should operate as normal. Flights operated by British Airways (BA) are most likely to experience disruption as they currently have sole use of Terminal 5. Long queues are possible for passenger processing procedures. Lingering disruptions are possible following the conclusion of the strike as the airport deals with passenger backlogs and airlines reposition aircraft and crew.

Advice

Confirm flights if booked to fly via LHR on the affected dates. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Arrive early at the airport to allow additional time for processing. Anticipate possible disruptions to freight routed via LHR. Consider alternative arrangements for critical travel or shipments.
