Cambodia: Candlelight Party plans large rally in Phnom Penh June 3-4 to denounce disqualification from elections

Opposition party to protest its disqualification in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, June 3-4. Heightened security likely; clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Cambodia's sole opposition, the Candlelight Party, has called for a large rally in Freedom Park, Phnom Penh, June 3-4. The action is to protest the upholding of its disqualification from the upcoming general elections scheduled July 23. Organizers claim over 10, 000 supporters will participate, despite Prime Minister Hun Sen warning of a crackdown on any unauthorized gatherings. Attendees are likely to defy any official ban and/or security restrictions on attendance and time limits, heightening the risk of clashes.

Authorities will almost certainly increase security around the rally venue and along access routes used for any street marches or vehicle processions. Localized traffic disruptions are likely in the vicinity. Although opposition leaders maintain the event will proceed peacefully, violent confrontations between participants and police who attempt to forcibly disperse crowds cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid the protest and navigating any roadblocks due to possible violence. Plan for possible road closures near any rally and seek alternative routes to circumvent the area. If any violence occurs nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a non-government building. Heed all official traffic and security advisories.
