DRC: Activists postpone protest march in Kinshasa to May 20 /update 1
Political activists postpone protest march in Kinshasa, DRC, to May 20. Avoid all protests.
Event
Political activists associated with the Commitment for Citizenship and Development (ECIDE), Together for the Republic, Leadership and Governance for Development (LGD), and the All Volunteers for the Recovery of the DRC (ENVOL) have postponed a protest march in Kinshasa from May 13 to 20. Organizers agreed on the postponement after authorities cited potential challenges in securing the demonstration May 13. The purpose of the action is to denounce insecurity in the country's eastern regions, the high cost of living, and the alleged chaotic electoral process.
Participants had initially planned to gather at two simultaneous points of departure starting at 08:00 and march to the People's Palace (Palais du Peuple). The first march route will gather participants at the Super Lemba roundabout before proceeding through the Kinshasa interchange along Limete Boulevard, Lumumba Boulevard, and Sendwe Avenue. The second protest route will gather on Benseke Avenue (Sakombi Place) before continuing along Benseke Avenue via Ma Campagne Fuel Station, Triomphale Avenue (Kasa-Vubu Avenue). Despite the postponement, rallies may still occur at the gathering venues May 13.
Heightened security and localized traffic disruptions are likely. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Advice
As a precaution, avoid any demonstrations that materialize. Plan for traffic disruptions and allow additional time to reach nearby destinations. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Monitor local media for updated information. Heed all official security and traffic advisories.
