France, Italy: Authorities in France close A43 autoroute and high-speed railway, Aug. 28, following landslide

Authorities closed the A43 autoroute and high-speed railway in the Savoie region, France, Aug. 28; road and rail disruptions reported.

Warning

Event

Authorities closed the A43 autoroute and high-speed railway Aug. 28, at Saint Andre in the Savoie region, following a landslide. Transport between eastern France and northern Italy is impacted.

The A43 autoroute is closed in both directions between St Michel de Maurienne and Le Freney, for an indefinite period. Traffic between France and Italy will be re-directed via the Frejus road tunnel. In order to mitigate the impact of increased traffic, authorities announced the temporary closure of the Frejus tunnel to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. Heavy goods vehicles and coaches are being re-directed to transit through the Mont-Blanc tunnel or the A8 motorway. Minor roads are also impacted in the vicinity of the landslide.

The French rail network operator, SNCF, has announced the suspension of all high-speed (TGV) and Italian Trenitalia services between St Michel de Maurienne and Modane, on the main line from Chambery to Turin, until at least Aug. 30.

Transport disruptions are likely to continue for several days. The road closures will likely lead to increased traffic and delays on alternative routes. Freight delays may impact logistics and business deliveries.

Advice

Avoid the affected area until authorities give the all-clear. Check for transport disruptions before beginning journeys and allow extra time for travel in the Savoie region. Make alternative travel arrangements if necessary. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
