Belarus, Latvia: Latvian authorities indefinitely close Silene border crossing with Belarus Sept. 19

Latvia indefinitely closes Silene border crossing on Belarus-Latvia border Sept. 19. Travel and freight disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Latvia closed the Silene border crossing station on the Belarus-Latvia border on Sept. 19; Silene is one of two crossings on the shared border. Latvian authorities state the closure has been imposed to prevent illegal migration. Cargo, commercial, and humanitarian transportation will be redirected to the Paternieki border crossing point, which remains open. It is unclear how long the Silene border crossing will remain closed.

Transport disruptions, including extended crossing times, are likely at the remaining crossing for the duration of the closure.

Advice

Reconfirm all ground travel between Latvia and Belarus. Allow additional time for freight shipments via the alternate crossing on the Latvia-Belarus border.
