Guatemala: Election-related protests likely to continue nationwide through at least late September /update 2

Protests are likely to continue in Guatemala through at least late September to defend results of presidential election.

Warning

Event

Protests in favor of President-elect Bernardo Arevalo will likely continue through at least late September. Demonstrators are likely to gather outside government buildings, especially in Guatemala City and other urban centers. Gatherings are particularly likely outside the National Congress and on Plaza de los Derechos Humanos, located opposite the Supreme Court, with protesters demanding the resignation of Attorney General Consuelo Porras. Blockades are also possible in the coming days, especially by activists affiliated with the Peasant Development Committee (Comite de Desarrollo Campesino, CODECA), who have blocked highways and key thoroughfares across Guatemala on Sept. 19.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near protest sites. Demonstrations have remained largely peaceful; however, clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out, especially if police move to dismantle protester roadblocks.

Context

Several demonstrations have been taking place amid Guatemala's controversial electoral process, especially since the top prosecutor's office raided two Supreme Electoral Tribunal (Tribunal Supremo Electoral, TSE) facilities on Sept. 12, after the second round on Aug. 20. Following the raid, president-elect Bernardo Arevalo suspended his participation in the government transition, denouncing perceived crimes of abuse of authority amid political uncertainty and concerns over possible interference in the electoral process.

Advice

Avoid all protests. If clashes occur, immediately take shelter in a secure, nongovernment building. Heed the directives of authorities. Monitor local news sources for further information. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the affected areas. Allow additional time to reach destinations in Guatemala.
