Warning

Event

The Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) party has called for rallies in Lahore Oct. 1-8 ahead of former Prime Minister and party leader Nawaz Sharif's return to Pakistan on Oct. 21. The first rally, which will take place in Shahdara Town at 18:00 on Oct. 1, will feature an address by PMLN Vice President Maryam Nawaz. Organizers have not specified other start times and gathering sites but stated that rallies are scheduled in several constituencies, including NA-123, NA-124, NA-125, NA-127, NA-128, NA-128, and NA-136. Possible gathering sites include PMLN party offices, public parks, government buildings, monuments, and major roadways. Participation in related demonstrations could range from hundreds to the low thousands.

Heightened security measures are likely near any gatherings that materialize. Typical security measures include increased security deployment and road closures. Clashes between police and PMLN supporters cannot be ruled out. Transport disruptions are possible if participants march on or block roadways. Associated localized business disruptions are possible.

Context

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is scheduled to return to Pakistan on Oct. 21 from London, marking the end of his self-imposed exile following his conviction on corruption charges in 2019 and subsequent seven-year prison sentence. Sharif's return is expected to position him as a key figure leading his party, PMLN, in the upcoming general election. Sharif will be eligible to participate, as political disqualification following a conviction is limited to five years. However, Pakistan's anti-graft body, the National Accountability Bureau, is set to reopen four graft cases against Sharif ahead of his return. Any legal developments pertaining to Sharif's graft cases, including court rulings, could trigger protests by PMLN supporters.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near gathering sites. Plan accordingly for possible localized business disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
