Unidentified assaillants killed two Chinese nationals and two members of their security detail in Misisi, Fizi Territory, South Kivu Province, around 01:00 Oct. 9. Preliminary reports indicate that the attack targeted a Chinese-owned mining site, with the perpetrators seizing cash, mobile phones, and other items.
Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely over the coming days as police attempt to locate and apprehend the perpetrators. Clashes between security forces and the assailants cannot be ruled out.
Misisi is located approximately 58 km (36 mi) from Fizi.
Context
The threat of criminal violence is severe in the eastern regions of the DRC, particularly near mining facilities. There are recurrent reports of fatal attacks against foreign nationals working in the mining sector. On Sept. 1, suspected armed bandits killed two Chinese nationals, members of their security detail, and a driver while leaving Ngalula in Fizi Territory.
