Activists plan to hold rallies and marches in several major cities in Latin America Oct. 20-22 to express their support for Palestinians amid the Israel-Hamas conflict. Demonstrations are scheduled to be held at the following locations and times:

  • Brasilia, Brazil: Museu da Republica, 17:00 Oct. 20

  • Mexico City, Mexico: Embassy of Israel, 18:00 Oct. 20; Angel de la Independencia, 14:00 Oct. 22

  • Lima, Peru: From Paseo de la Republica to Parque Washington, 16:00 Oct. 21

  • Sao Paulo, Brazil: Praca Oswaldo Cruz, 11:00 Oct. 22

Additional demonstrations are likely in cities throughout the region, including near Israeli and Palestinian diplomatic offices, synagogues, mosques, identifiably Jewish or Palestinian business premises, public squares, universities, and major government buildings. Counterprotests are likely in some of the locations. A heightened security presence is likely near related demonstrations. Associated localized transport and business disruptions are probable. Clashes between police and protesters, as well as between rival demonstrators, are possible; acts of vandalism may also occur.

Moreover, some schools and religious centers may close or limit the hours they are open; extra deployments of police or private security are possible near such locations.

Advice

Exercise heightened vigilance near demonstrations. Allow additional time for journeys in affected areas. Heed all official directives. Leave the area at the first sign of a security disturbance.
