Brazil: Authorities to deploy increased security in Rio de Janeiro for Nov. 4 Copa Libertadores Final match

Authorities to deploy additional security for Nov. 4 Copa Libertadores Final in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Authorities in Rio de Janeiro plan to maintain an elevated security posture through at least Nov. 5 as the city hosts the Copa Libertadores Final soccer match. The event will take place at the Maracana Stadium and pit Brazil's Fluminense Football Club against Argentina's Boca Juniors for the South American champion title.

The municipality will deploy about 1,200 police officers throughout Rio de Janeiro, especially near Galeao International Airport (GIG), Santos Dumont Airport (SJU), and tourist areas such as Copacabana Beach. Additionally, an unspecified number of state and federal forces will be deployed in the city. Officials also plan to ban the sale of alcoholic beverages in areas near the Maracana Stadium between the hours of 00:01 Nov. 4 and 06:00 Nov. 5. There will be specific areas in the city for fans of each team to watch the game, including the Sambodromo; around 100,000 Argentinians are expected in Rio de Janeiro for the event, although only around 25,000 have tickets to attend the game.

Transport disruptions are likely around the Maracana Stadium and tourist areas in Rio de Janeiro. Clashes between groups of fans of opposing teams, or between fans and police are possible, as are acts of violence and looting before or immediately after the game.

Strictly heed instructions from authorities. Avoid crowded areas in Rio de Janeiro during the scheduled match. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional time to reach destinations in Rio de Janeiro Nov. 3-5. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by police.
