Security forces have used tear gas and water cannons to disperse pro-Palestine protesters on the Sea Point Promenade in Cape Town, South Africa, Nov. 12. Reports indicate pro-Palestine protesters gathered around 12:00 on the Sea Point Promenade in response to a pro-Israel march planned by Christian organizations at 14:30 Nov. 12. A heavy police presence remains in place.
Security forces will likely maintain an increased presence in the area, which could result in localized transport disruptions. Clashes between pro-Palestine and pro-Israel protesters are possible as are clashes between protesters and security forces, particularly if the latter are overly disruptive or ignore police orders to disperse.
Avoid the protest as a precaution. Heed the advice of security personnel. Allow additional time to reach destinations near the affected area Nov. 12.
On Nov. 11, a pro-Palestine protest march, organized by diverse religious groups and political party, gathered at least 10,000 people in Cape Town. The demonstation was peaceful and no incident was reported.
