US: Lingering transport disruptions likely in Los Angeles, Calif., after fire prompts authorities to close section of I-10 as of mid-November
Damage from suspected act of arson prompts officials to indefinitely close part of I-10 in Los Angeles, Calif., US, as of mid-November.
Lingering transport disruptions are likely in and around Los Angeles, California, after a fire damaged part of Interstate 10 (I-10), also known as the 10 Freeway and Santa Monica Freeway, in the area Nov. 11. California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in connection with the blaze and said that it was likely caused by arson. Newsom did not immediately indicate if authorities were searching for any suspects or persons of interest in connection with the incident. There have been no reports of casualties in connection with the fire.
As of Nov. 13, officials had asserted that the impacted section of I-10 - roughly 1.6 km (1 mile) in length, between Alameda Street and the East Los Angeles Interchange - would remain closed until further notice. Authorities did not immediately provide an estimated date by which the route would be fully repaired. Officials have advised drivers to seek alternative routes, take public transit, and, if possible, avoid downtown Los Angeles while cautioning that the highway closure will significantly impact the flow of traffic in the region.
Heavy traffic congestion is likely on alternative routes and in the downtown area of Los Angeles until authorities repair and reopen the impacted section of I-10.
Plan for lingering traffic disruptions in the Los Angeles area. Allow additional time to reach your destination and confirm appointments. Monitor traffic updates issued by local and state officials.
