Arson and violence reported during protests in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, afternoon Jan. 10. Shelter in place and avoid gatherings.

Critical

Violent protests are ongoing in Port Moresby as of the afternoon of Jan. 10. The unrest began after security personnel from the Papua New Guinea Police Force (PNGPF) and Defence Force (PNGDF) protested at Parliament House and Unagi Oval to denounce a payroll error. Widespread looting is occurring across the city, including in Boroko, Gordon, Hohola, Konedobu, Sabama, and Waigini districts. Several buildings, including the Prime Minister's office and malls like Stop & Shop Waigini, have been set on fire by protesters. Security forces are currently on strike and are not responding to riots in the city. Social media reports suggest that Public Motor Vehicle (PMV) buses and taxis are not operating due to the unrest.

Further violent incidents, including looting, arson, and clashes, are likely across Port Moresby over the coming hours. Transport and business disruptions are likely near any gatherings that may materialize. Authorities could impose restrictive measures, such as road closures, gathering bans, or curfews to quell unrest. Port Moresby International Airport (POM) remains open but flight disruptions are possible at short notice over the coming hours.

Shelter in place if operating in Port Moresby due to ongoing violent unrest. Avoid all protests due to the potential for violence. If crowds begin forming nearby, immediately depart the area. Monitor local media for updates on protests and road conditions. Plan for localized transport disruptions; use alternative routes to circumvent areas where demonstrations are occurring. Heed all official security and traffic advisories. Reconfirm the status of all transport services before departure.
