Russia: Activists plan to stage demonstration in Ufa, Bashkortostan, Jan. 19
Bashkir activists plan to demonstrate at Monument to Salavat Yulaev in Ufa, Russia, from 10:00 Jan. 19; heightened security, arrests likely.
Ethnic Bashkir activists have called for a demonstration at the Monument to Salavat Yulaev in Ufa, Bashkortostan, from 10:00 Jan. 19. The purpose of the action is to denounce the Jan. 17 sentencing of activist Fail Alsynov to four years in prison and authorities' alleged discrimination against Bashkir people. Thousands of people participated in a related demonstration in Baymak shortly after Alsynov's sentencing, and some protesters clashed with security forces. The number of people who may participate in the planned Jan. 19 rally in Ufa was not immediately clear.
Authorities will almost certainly deploy security forces to the demonstration site. Law enforcement officers will likely seek to arrest many or all demonstrators. Clashes between activists and security forces cannot be ruled out. Localized transport disruptions are likely.
Strictly avoid the demonstration. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur. Keep all necessary documents on your person and be prepared to potentially be stopped by law enforcement officers if operating in Ufa Jan. 19. Follow all instructions issued by local authorities.
