Finland: Unionized freight workers extend nationwide strike through April 1 /update 1

Unionized freight workers to continue to strike across Finland until 06:00 April 1; port, shipping, and logistics disruptions ongoing.

Warning

Freight transport workers represented by several major labor unions plan to continue a nationwide strike until 06:00 April 1. The industrial action was initially for two weeks, from 06:00 March 11 to 06:00 March 24, however as of March 21, union leaders announced that the strike would continue for another week. Further extensions are possible. The purpose of the industrial action is to demand improved working conditions. The strike involves around 7,000 workers, employed in the freight trucking, transport control, maritime shipping port, and rail freight sectors.

The work stoppage will likely continue to impact logistics facilities and infrastructure, as well as oil refinery terminals. Labor leaders assert that the action will not impact passenger transport. Striking workers could stage low-level demonstrations or pickets near their places of employment or government buildings. Authorities could deploy increased security to monitor any such gatherings that may materialize. Disruptions to freight shipping could extend for several days after the strike ends as service providers work through their backlogs.

Reconfirm freight transport schedules through at least April 1. Consider alternative transport methods for critical shipments. Stock up on essential supplies before the start of the strike.
